GUJARAT. After three consecutive festivals the market is slowly wakening up to the facts created by the weather. Although rain has benefitted the Rabi crops, especially cumin, it has also caused great concerns.

The sesame seed crop has been considerably damaged and the turmeric crop possibly as well. In addition, the arrivals of pepper have decreased, which will result in increased import activities. The expected failure of the north-east monsoon has also resulted in active buying.

Cumin
Since stocks are starting to run low export demand is expected to pick up this year. Turkey and Syria will witness a shortfall in production, which will have a considerable impact on supplies. Acreage is, however, likely to increase in the Rabi season, which may sharp increases in price. In India cumin is sown in October/November and harvested from March.

Turmeric
The market may have been stable this week, but demand and prices are expected to pick up in the coming days. Another factor to be considered are the heavy rains in Telangana and Maharashtra, which may have caused considerable crop damages. These concerns may give the prices and additional lift.

Chili
It seems as if the market is currently on hold with the low price level putting off sellers of red chili. They expect demand to pick up ahead of the festival.

Cardamom
With arrivals slowly increasing and the quality of the new crop slowly improving cardamom would normally trade lower. However, the upcountry and overseas demand is preventing prices from falling.

Please find attached this week's prices.
