Chickpeas: supplies are shrinking

NEW DELHI/OTTAWA. In Canada, chickpea stocks are currently the lowest since 2018 - some relief could come from an increase in acreage. India is also experiencing some shortages.

Crop declines in India

Low demand from Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh means that trade in the chickpea market is currently very sluggish. On the one hand, this leads to lower arrivals, on the other hand to price declines of about USD 10/mt compared to last week. Growers are also reporting pest infestations in parts of the fields, mostly affecting the Kabuli Chana variety.

Although the new crop is in peak season, there are some shortages in the shops. The wedding season is once again in full swing in India and chickpeas are a sought-after foodstuff, so market
