Chickpeas: supplies at risk

NEW DELHI. With growers warning of a global supply squeeze for chickpeas countries largely depending on pulses as an important protein source may be hard-hit. Stocks are indeed running low in many importing countries as traders in India report.

Global supply squeeze anticipated

Many reports over a supply squeeze for hummus and chickpeas have been circulating in recent days. As the Global Pulse Confederation states global chickpea supplies may drop by as much a 20% this year. Issues are adverse weather conditions in many producing countries coupled with the war in Ukraine. While the war disprupted growing in Ukraine, where the total chickpea crop ranges 50,000 mt and which is mainly shipped to Europe, the sanctions also cut off supplies from Russia as Reuters reports.
