ANKARA/NEW DELHI. Both Turkey and Russia are expected to have a very good chickpea production this year; the situation is different in Australia. In India, prices continue to rise due to high demand.

France is back in the game

According to the experts at Chelmer Foods, Turkish chickpea production is expected to increase by 20% this year and a good crop of around 300,000 mt is expected. Of this, about 150,000 mt is expected to be exported. Traders think that the export restrictions on chickpeas that have been in place until now will be lifted this year due to the high crop volume. Turkish prices are proving to be quite attractive compared to other origins such as Argentina, Canada or France, and according to Chelmer Foods, also for long-term contracts. However, France is trying to compete and it remains interesting to keep an eye on developments there.

In Australia, meanwhile, chickpea prices have fallen slightly and the container problem that arose during the coronavirus pandemic now seems to have been resolved. This leads market players to expect a positive development for the winter crop business. However, due to a smaller acreage, the crop of 514,000 mt is only about half the size of last year, according to current estimates.

Russia continuously increases production

According to the latest data from StatsCan, Canadian exports are expected to do very well and export volumes are significantly higher than in the 2021/22 season. However, Chelmer Foods expects very strong competition from Russia here, as Canadian chickpeas are among the most expensive on the world market. Russian production is expected to reach 501,000 mt, which would be a significant increase over the 434,000 mt of the previous year. By comparison, two years ago the Russian crop was only 324,000 mt.

On the Indian chickpea market, prices rose by USD 15/mt compared to last week. Market players there had expected this due to the significantly higher domestic and overseas demand. In addition, only small quantities are still reaching the markets, as farmers are busy with the new sowing season. Indian chickpeas, 42-44 (12 mm) currently cost 1,840 USD/mt FOB India.
