Chickpeas: price declines continue

NEW DELHI. After traders had already wondered about the low prices at the beginning of the year, there were further declines in the course of last week. Indian experts, however, estimate that the preliminary low point may have been reached.

Possible record crop in northern India

The unexpectedly low chickpea prices of the previous week have fallen by another USD 10/mt after stockists released more goods for sale. They are coming under selling pressure as all indications are that this year's chickpea production will be high due to favourable weather conditions. News of a record crop in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka has even reached the markets from northern India, putting additional downward pressure on prices.
