Chickpeas: mixed growing conditions in Canada

NEW DELHI/OTTAWA. While some Canadian growing areas are blessed with adequate moisture, others are experiencing drought conditions that will reduce yields. In India, prices have fallen slightly; however, this is likely to be short-lived.

Indian prices could rise soon

Indian chickpea prices are down USD 10/mt from last week, with traders citing the general decline in kabuli chana chickpea prices on the world market as the reason. The fact that prices are not falling more is due to small stocks, which are said to be 32% lower than last year due to reduced production. The new crop is not expected until February/March, and the low stocks could therefore soon lead to price increases.
