NEW DELHI. The Indian government is currently buying large quantities of chickpeas to the relief of farmers, with the minimum support price even being almost a fifth above current spot market prices. Overall, inflation is giving market players a hard time.

Various advantages through government purchases

After weeks of price declines in the Indian chickpea market, traders there had been hopeful when the first slight increases occurred. These continued at the beginning of last week, but then the tide turned surprisingly quickly and prices fell again by about USD 20/mt. The market is currently confronted with many ifs and buts, as Indian market players report. One positive aspect, according to them, is that the government is buying large quantities of chickpeas, at the minimum support price, which is already 15-20%
